What is SEO or Search Engine Optimisation ?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) otherwise known as Search Engine Optimization is the process of achieving higher rankings in the search engines and also driving organic traffic to your website from the major search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. The most well known search engine today is Google.

At the moment Google has over 200 ranking factors which are ranked by their most recent algorithm. The more of these contributing factors which you satisfy, the higher the ranking of the website.

There are 2 types of SEO, on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

On-Page SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

On-page SEO includes proper keyword researching and implementing those keywords on title and description meta tags, heading tags, optimising images and video using alternate text and keeping keyword density to an optimum level on your website.

It is also important to have a robots.txt and XML sitemap file to help the search engine crawlers to craw your website properly. On-page SEO counts for 25% of Google’s ranking algorithm.

Off-Page SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

Off-page SEO includes creating backlinks to websites such as articles, blogs, press releases, forums, directory submissions, social bookmarking and wiki links that drive organic traffic back to your website. This makes up 75% of the Google’s ranking algorithm.

However, before working on the off-page SEO it is vital to have the on-page SEO optimised as this will provide a solid basis for further off-page SEO work.
